In various Italian cities, violent confrontations erupted between law enforcement and demonstrators in response to the Israeli offensive in Gaza. The unrest was sparked by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's refusal to endorse the establishment of a Palestinian state.
As reported by a news outlet, trade unions escalated the protests, calling for citizens to 'block everything' and organizing a nationwide strike to amplify their message.
State media indicated that police deployed tear gas to disperse crowds at Milan's central station, where some protesters vandalized property. Many demonstrators were seen carrying Palestinian flags, and reports confirmed that at least 60 police officers sustained injuries during the clashes.
The opposition criticized Meloni for her stance against recognizing Palestinian statehood, labeling the ensuing violence as 'shameful.' Despite her current position, Italy had previously supported Palestine in a UN General Assembly vote.
In a post on X, Meloni expressed her outrage over the events in Milan, condemning the actions of self-identified 'pro-Pal' individuals and others who engaged in violence. She emphasized that such actions do not contribute to solidarity and will ultimately harm Italian citizens, who will bear the financial burden of the damages caused. Meloni called for a strong condemnation from strike organizers and political leaders.
